The AFRHINET International, Networking, Dissemination and Round Table Event was held on the 28th September at the Holiday Inn in Harare, Zimbabwe.

The theme of the event was Raising Awareness on Rainwater Harvesting Technologies for Small-Scale Irrigation: Capacity Building, Technology Transfer and Upscaling.

The main objectives of the event were:
- Facilitating knowledge sharing among various stakeholders on issues relative to RWHI
- Fostering the implementation of the AFRHINET network and the Research and Technology Centres in all 4 partner countries
- Fostering efficient ways of implementing and upscaling AFRHINET activities through capacity building, technology transfer, networking and demonstration trials. IMG 0747


The dissemination event was well attended with over 40 relevant stakeholders including project partners from across the sub-Saharan part of the continent. The programme for the event comprised of 3 sessions, namely:
Session 1: Policy needs for successful Rainwater Harvesting in Zimbabwe
Session 2: Lessons from the field – Rainwater Harvesting Champions
Session 3: Round table event


Each session comprised of upto 5 presentations and was followed by plenary discussions which contributed to relevant solutions and outcomes in the light of the project goals and activities. A few interesting topics relative to the presentations were:
- Rain Water Harvesting and Irrigation methods in use in smallholder farming areas. What is the role of the Department in facilitating scaling up? Dept of Irrigation
- Technical and Policy guidelines to ensure successful adoption of RWHI technologies-ZINWA   
- Selected best experiences RWHI experiences from Kenya- SEARNET-ICRAF                                                                             
- Experiences with promotion and adoption of rain water harvesting technologies at community level. Challenges? Way Forward?-CIMMYT
- Farmers' experiences with RWHI (2 Farmers- 1 lady 1 male)

The highlight of the event a field trip to Zvishavane that took place on the 30th September 2015.

Zvishavane is a small mining town located in the Midlands Province of Zimbabwe and is about 388 km from Harare. The late Mr. Zephania Masekos Phiri´s farm was visited who was a renowned conservationist and indegenious permaculturist in Zimbabwe. Mr. Phiri propagated irrigation practices that support efficient subsistence farming on marginal lands.
